Surname for a child

My daughter, though unmarried at this time, desires to give her expected child the fathers surname. Can she? Or must the child have her (our) surname?

Within reason she can name the child whatever she pleases (not every culture in Texas uses anglosaxon naming conventions). She cannot put the Dad down on the birth certificate as the father unless they are married or he signs an AOP (Acknowledgment of Paternity)
