Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

How to terminate a father's rights

My ex-husband has not seen or talked to my kids in quite sometime. He is has not paid any child support since the divorce. My children are very stable now and they believe my new husband is their father. My question is what can I do so that my husband can adopt the children and how can I keep my ex-husband from coming back and disrupting their lives. My children are 7 and 4 and they do not deserve to have their lives disrupted.

Thank You

Re: How to terminate a father's rights

You need to hire a lawyer. Even though, you have the right to represent yourself, this is a complicated procedural process.

There is a process by which you would file a Petition to Terminate Parental rights, simultaneously with a Step-parent Adoption.

If you do not take this route, for whatever reason, you should at least file for back and current child support. The Attorney General's Office will assist you.
