Legal Question in Family Law in Texas
Terminating Parental Rights/Adoption
I was not married to my sons father, however is name is on the birth certificate. He abandoned "us" when I was 3 months preganant. Never contributed any support. When my son was 1 yr old, his bio dad had seen him approximately 11 times. He was incarcerated for Aggravated Sexual Assault at that time, and is still in prison. I have since married and my son considers my husband his Dad, and he is - in every way except legally. I contacted my Ex in prison requesting he relinquish his parental rights, and he has refused. I contacted an attorney and was quoted an estimate of $5,000 for terminating parental rights and the adoption. We just can't afford that amount at this time. Is that a going rate for this type of case? Could someone please guide me in the right direction as to who to contact for representation at a lesser fee? If that is even possible? We reside in Harris County. My ex could get paroled next year and I am just beside myself, as I want to protect my son. I don't want him to pay for my stupid mistakes. I am somewhat afraid of my ex as he, as you can see by his conviction, can be violent and dangerous. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

I don't think a $5,000 fee is out of line.
Re: Terminating Parental Rights/Adoption
I will do the termination and adoption for $3,000 plus court costs and my travel expenses. Since I have friends and family in the HOU area, I would only need reimbursement for auto expenses (500 mi. @ .39/mi. = $195)
