Before you drop your attorney, make an appointment with the legal aid office, and see if you qualify for assistance. If you do, then they will substitute themselves in as your lawyer. There will be a delay in the transition, but not a huge one. Know that legal aid's resources are limited, and you will not get the same kind of attention you got from a retained attorney. If you do NOT qualify, go to your lawyer, and explain that you cannot afford her anymore, and ask if she can work a payment plan with you. If she cannot, then ask her to refer you to another private attorney that charges less, and works on payment plans. It can be done.
