How in trouble are we?

Me and my mothers boyfriend have been seeing each other, and I fell for him they may be considered common law married and I want to be with him and he wants to be with me.We would like to get married.My mother has broken it off compleatly with him, but what laws if any could stand in the way and what laws could help us(if there are any) get throught this situation if they are common law married?
