Unwed mother's rights

I am about to have a baby and am unwed. The father and I tried to live together but it just didn't work out. He wants me to give the child his last name. If I do that what rights does he have to the child? He has proven with his other 4 children to be an irresponsible parent and I really don't want him spending time alone with this child. His son that still lives with him has a drug problem and treated my other children terribly whe we lived with them.

Your child's name has no effect on dad's rights, duties and responsibilities as parent.
