My ex wife has legal custody of our child and C.P.S. odered that I have him due to her having a drug problem. Do I really have to spend thousands on a lawer to get custody?

That depends on what CPS has proposed. If CPS has primary conservatorship, and wants to name you as the placement for the child, then they will handle it for you (but you will not get the kind of representation you may want). If your exwife is not opposing the placement, then getting a lawyer would protect you better, and probably could be done for less than you think.
