how long and at what age does arrearages stop.

I assume you are referring to child support payments. Child support arrearages never "stop." They will remain on record and accumulating interest as long as the account is not brought up to date or they are otherwise forgiven by the receiving parent. I know of some children for whom child support accumulated who are approaching 40 years of age and interest on arrearages alone has outpaced the original amount.
