In certain cases, it is necessary to retain one or more "expert witnesses," and if an expert is retained, the identity of that witness must be revealed to the other side before a certain deadline, which is known as "designation" of that witness. The entire process by which one side "discovers" the evidence the other side intends to present at trial is called "discovery." Examples of "expert witnesses" would be doctors (who would testify about your injuries), engineers (if you were injured in an elevator, for example), accountants (if your case involved financial matters), etc.
