Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Texas

Ex boyfriend left pwing lots of money after I supported him and his kids

My ex boyfriend who I had been with for years lived with me for about the past 2 years. His multiple children also moved in with me The first few months he drew unemployment and did give me some money. For all the others he did not help with rent, utilities, his prescriptions, school money, groceries etc. I paid for everything and he was ''supposed'' to get a job...well he did not until one week ago and then he moves out and owes me several thousands dollars he promised to repay of me soley supporting him and his kids. Do I have any recourse? While he was taking all his stuff I kept asking was he going to pay me back and he kept saying he was advised by an attorney not to talk to me about money until he had his stuff out of my house...Can I go file suit on my own...is there an attorney out there who would write a letter... It was not my responsibility to support him and his kids and I would have never done it but he promised he was going to pay it all back Please advise.

About all you can do is sue him in Small Claims, for no more than $5,000.00. Collection upon the judgment, if any, will probably be the hardest part.
