Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Texas

My daughter stole a ten dollar necklace that was immediately recovered when she was caught. I have received 2 settlement offers from the law firn that represents the store asking 1st for 300 now for 700. What could they possibly get in a civil suit?

Punitive damages far in excess of the 10 bucks -- but there must be more to it if they're pressing in this manner. Did you give all the facts in your question?
