Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Texas

My now exboyfriend bought me a ring from Kay Jewelers as a birthday gift on a Saturday as my birthday was coming up the following Tuesday. I had to help him with the down payment as he didn't have enough. I made it very clear from the start it was not an engagement ring, he never proposed to me with it and he even confirmed it was just a birthday gift when I showed it to my best friend.

He is now claiming I owe him for it and I say I don't. Who is right?
