Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Texas

Furniture was a gift, now threatening to sue if we don't pay for it.

On April 10, my families house burned down. A family friend went out, without my family's request, and purchased furniture for us. They told us at the time that it was a gift. Now, we have just found out that the husband is a cocaine user and has spent all of their money of drugs. He is desperate for money and is threatening to sue my family if they don't pay for the furniture. Can he do this?

Anybody can sue anybody else anytime for anything. He would have to prove that the items were transferred to you with the expectation of payment. Given the circumstances, this seems difficult.
