Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Texas

I was involved in an electrical fire in my apartment and lost everything. I didnt have renters insurance however I did report problems with the electrical wiring to apartment maintenance several times. In addition, the apartments had everything totally cleaned out and did not notify me. There were a couple visible items that were not destroyed and I was not allowed to retrieve them. Is there any legal action I can take? Should the apartments be responsible for items lost due to their negligence in maintaining the apartment building?

You'll want to take a look at your lease, but generally, the answer to your question is "You probably have a good cause of action against the landlord."

You'll want to start preparing NOW. Make a list of the property you lost, showing the amount you paid for it, when you acquired it, and how much you believe it was worth at the time of the fire. Dig up any photographs you have of the property itself.

As best you can remember, write down the dates that you contacted the landlord about the electrical problems. This will become important later on. Record any and all interactions with the apartment complex folks and their representatives.

You'll start with a demand letter, followed by a lawsuit when they don't respond.
