Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Texas

I live in Texas. Approximately 2 years ago a friend of my fiance brought her sofa to our apartment, saying she no longer had room for it. We've assumed all this time that she was giving the sofa to him, as she has never spoken of it since. Until today. She contacted him at work and requested to come and pick up the couch, claiming that 2 years ago she had said she was letting him "borrow it". He was under the impression that it was given, and accepted it under those terms when she offered it. He did not ask her for the sofa, nor was there any kind of written agreement.

My chief question is: Are we legally required to grant her request? I know there is a good chance of her showing up at the door, and I want to know what our rights are in the matter. I most certainly don't want to be without a sofa indefinitely.

Don't wait for somebody to show up at the door. Tell this person (write him a paper letter if you have his address) that this sofa was a gift to you and you aren't going to give it to him.
