Ownership of vehicle within family
Who would be the legal owner of a vehicle purchased for a minor at the time, title was put in father's name due to state law for loan of vehicle must be in an adults name. The minor is now of legal age and has made all the payments up to this point on the vehicle and has cancelled checks to prove this. Family disagreement has caused now 18 year old to move from home and wants possession of the vehicle. Parent took the vehicle from where the 18 year old was living and refuses to return it unless said 18 year old moves back home.

Re: Ownership of vehicle within family
The legal owner is the father, since he holds legal title to the vehicle. The son is the equitable owner, since he made all the payments. However, proving up equitable ownership would require a lawsuit.
