Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Texas

Privacy issue

I am involved in a messy divorce. Recently, I was at a club where I know the owner. I was not aware that he has a covert surveillance system installed, both audio and video. Subsequently, he has over an hour of taped conversation that could be potentially harmful to me. He showed my stepdaugher the tape and now I not only have to be concerned about embarrassment but also blackmail on her part. Do I have any legal recourse in this situation. Thank you

Re: Privacy issue

Blackmail is a crime. Your recourse is to report attempted blackmail to the authorities and have the purpetrator prosecuted. This may in the course of things divulge the subject you don't wish to be public.

You have no expectation of privacy in a public place. It is not a crime to have recorded your intemperate conversation. It is, however, a crime to attempt to use that information to extort money or something else of value from you.
