Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Texas
Psycho Father in law
My father in law bought my family some furniture last April when their house burned down. It wasn't asked for but was appreciated seeing as they didn't have anything left. They also gave my family the receipt with the amount marked out so that my family would not know how much the furniture cost. It was given to them a gift. In June, he admitted he was on cocaine. He started calling my husband (his step son) and telling him that if we did not give him 2000 he would sue us. We gave him the money, not because we wanted to but because we just wanted him out of our lives. His wife tore up the check and told us not to worry about it because the furniture was a gift and he was still taking drugs. He called us again a few hours ago threatening with ''pay by the end of the day or else''. I am wondering if I should get a restraining order and/or report the harassment to the authorities. Also, should I obtain a lawyer for him to contact when he starts acting crazy so that we don't have to deal with him? Thank you.
