Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Texas

I recieved a packet from a delivery man regarding a civil lawsuit filed against me from HSBC bank trying to collect an old credit card debt. It is within the Statue of Limitations for Texas but I am concerned that they will be able to garnish my wages or freeze my bank account if I do nothing. The loan was for a Best Buy credit card and after paying it for several months I lost my job and could no longer pay for it. Now with the interest and all the fees the amount stated that I owe is 2,550 us dollars. This loan was an unsecured loan and I am a veteran without a job and also currently a student. My only income is my G.I. Bill and I could not survive without it if they were to freeze my bank account. Are they able to actually garnish my GI Bill or freeze my bank account?

In Texas wages cannot be garnished for nonpayment of a debt. However, bank accounts can be garnished.

If you do not timely file an answer to the lawsuit, the plaintiff could ask for a default judgment against you. You need to promptly contact an attorney about your options.
