Unfairly Demoted
I worked as a Quality Engineer for a major semiconductor company and was laid off in April, 2003. A company with whom I had associated was pursuing me to work for them, but it would have meant a move to another city, so they offered me a position to work as their rep at the company I had just left at the same salary. Then they offered me a mgmt position at their facility, which meant we had to move ($15,000/yr pay raise). I accepted the position, but my wife stayed behind and let the kids finish the school year. For six months, we were separated and sacrificed much to move the family. Suddenly the company changed their minds, returned me to my previous position and salary, and sent me packing. They said some other managers wanted it this way, and that it had nothing to do with my job performance or qualification. My family now has to go back and try to undo all the things started for the move (plus my house is half empty and ready to paint). All they offered me was to pay for my U-Haul. Now I am making less money and demoted for no apparent reason. Do I have any legal recourse?

Probably not, unless you had a written employment contract.
