The criminal record aside, a person cannot adjust status, even if they are eligible for an immigration benefit, if they have an unlawful entry (there is the INA 245i exception, but it is probably not applicable in your situation). Obviously, there are very limited exceptions that might apply. However, without an underlying petitioner or some other immigration benefit eligibility, one cannot just get a greencard. I suggest you refer to the USCIS website for some general background information: http://www.uscis.gov/greencard. Good luck.
Your misdemeanors might be a ground for inadmissibility when you apply for legal status. However, there are different kinds of waiver that might help you to overcome this inadmissible grounds. We suggest you to consult with an immigration attorney to discuss your options and possible solutions.
