Help

I was born in Mexico at birth thru my father who is a Us citizen i was admitted to the Us as a citizen. I recall having my birth certificate and it was stamped on the front with some seal. I have since lost my birth certificate. I was going to go to school and i was going to apply for a pell grant and my social security number came back that I am not a US citizen. Where can I get copies of those papers.

Re: Help

Are you referring to the consular report of birth of a US citizen abroad? (FS-240)If so, you need to go to the US Department of State web site at http://travel.state.gov. Go to the consular section with regard to US citizens. Follow the instructions. Since you don't have a copy of the original report of birth abroad, you will need to execute an affidavit to obtain a duplicate FS-240 and pay the required fee.

If your birth was not registerd abroad as a USC, you can still prove that you are a USC. However, the process is a great deal more complicated. You may not be able to accomplish this on you own without the services of a lawyer. Worst case scenario, if your claim is denied, you may have to go to federal court to prosecute your claim.
