Legal Question in Immigration Law in Texas

About coming to the United States to study.

First, thanks for reading this.

I have a friend from who was born in Mexico, who illegally lived in the USA since he was 6 years old, but then moved back to Mexico when he was 14. Since he really wants to study medicine, he wants to attend a good University in Texas State. How would he--name removed--about doing this? If he has to become a citizen, what are the steps he must take, and how long does the process usually take?

Thank you for your time.

Re: About coming to the United States to study.

Your friend, or you on his behalf, needs to sit down with an immigration lawyer to explore the options available to him. He does not need citizenship to come to the US to study. He may very well qualify for a student visa, which may later qualify him for legal permanent residence, and then later, citizenship. He may have close relatives in the US who can petition on his behalf. The time spent illegally in the US between 6 years and 14 years can be waived, if he otherwise qualifies.
