This depends on what type of a case you are talking about. If you are talking about an immigration benefit application, you can check the status of your application online at the USCIS website

Make sure you have the application receipt number.
If you want to check the status of your immigration case before an immigration judge or the Board of Immigration Appeals, you can call the BIA hotline. You can find the number through this link (look at the Case Information number).
