Re: Permanent resident applying for spouse

The current backlog for this category is approximately 5 years. The backlog waiting period, historically, has gotten longer, not shorter.

You would be wise to apply for citizenship first.

The recent immigration bill discussions have included wiping out this backlog.

As a permanent resident you can apply for your spouse to enter the United States as a green card holder. Spouses of permanent residents fall under the 2nd preference category. Currently, the wait time for a visa to become available is approximately five years. If you become a U.S. citizen before then, you can upgrade the visa petition so that your spouse's priority date can process immediately.
