can my insurance company force me to total my car? It can be repaired. Iwant to repair it with my own money because I'm upside down on value of car and still owe the bank

No, they can't force you to total out your car. You can receive the amount the car is worth, less "salvage" value. You can then pay a shop to repair the car, but it will have a salvage title. You should also check with your bank, as you may have gap insurance, which covers a total loss of the car when you are upside down on it.
