Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Texas
what does a muscian do with unsolicited songs?
When a professional muscian(published&recorded) receives
unsolicited music and lyrics what should the muscian do
with this material? The muscian prefers to perform all
original music. Does acceptance of this material set up
future problems? Should he return the songs, put them in
a file and never look at them, or assume that because
this other person ''gave'' him these songs that there could
no future ramifications?

Re: what does a muscian do with unsolicited songs?
If the musician does not wish to use the unsolicited material, (s)he should return them, unopened if possible, with a note that states his/her policy of not using unsolicited material, that the material was not reviewed beyond the extend to determine that it was unsolicited material, and that it will not be used.
If the musician wishes to use the material, (s)he should acquire the rights to do so by negotiating with the person who created it, either by procuring a license or the entire suite of copyright rights. I can help, if you'd like.
