Do you need permission to publish in a book a photo of yourself someone else took (like an uncle)?

Depends on the circumstances under which the picture was taken. Normally, yes, the photographer retains the copyright unless there is a written agreement to the contrary.

As a Franchise Attorney I entirely agree with my colleague's answer. Your uncle holds the copyright in the picture. What kind of agreement do you have currently? Can you get his written permission to publish? Consult with a good copyright or franchise attorney in your area for specific advice.
