Legal Question in Intellectual Property in Texas

I have recently reproduced a plastic gauge bezel for a 1964 classic car that I own using the original part as a mold. This was done out of necessity as the part is not currently reproduced by any aftermarket companies and it is for personal use. However, there is demand for the part and I would be able to sell many of the parts. If I were to reproduce the part for resale, would I need to obtain permission or a license from the auto company? Also, I plan to alter the design and offer another product that accepts newer technology. The redesigned product would be based on the original, but only retain the original shape and mounting holes. Would I need a license or permission for this part as well? Thank You.

An attorney will say the answer is probably not. There are many after market auto parts available. Consult with an attorney in your area for specifics.
