Legal Question in Employment Law in Texas

I am self employed and I work as a face painter for private and corporate parties and events. I was hired for short term seasonal work at the state fair of TX to do face painting by ****** with 7 other face painters. He was saying how much approx. ($) we are going to make and we that all going be a team for the state fair season. He assigned each and everyone specific days when we will be working. I was promiced to work there every week on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the time period of September 28 to the end of the fair October 21 and I had been paid on a daily basis a percentage of my earnings. Before I agreed to work there at the State Fair and because of that I had to cancel all my prior scheduled jobs, events and arangements. I've been working there already for two weekends. On October 13, on my way to the Fair at 6.30 am I got a text message from my employer, stating that he doesn't need me, it is going to be slow that I shouldn't come anymore. I was in complete shock, and emotionally disstressed, since I had no idea about it and that he had any kind of problems with me, from what he expressed in his text message that morning. He never talked to me about it or even called me. He just texed me that only one time. I know I was doing what I supposed to and I believe I was doing a great job, since I took pride in being a part of the State Fair team. Everything seemed great except that we weren't as busy at the fair as he promised we would be and my only thought on it now is that he was just trying to get rid of people..me, in that strange and unfair way. I am out of all my previously scheduled jobs for the month of October (the most busy month in face painting bussiness) that I had to cancel and my question is it even legal for him to do this to me? Without any warning? I am a single parent and a hard worker I can't afford to lose any jobs like that. I work as a self employed for a few agencies for years and I never had any problems with anyone ever yet.

Please help me. Can I file a complaint against him and if so, where? I am out of many jobs now and it will be really difficult for me to recover some of them.
