An employer cannot fraudulently or negligently give a negative (or positive) recommendation or evaluation of your work. That means an employer can honestly say if they fired you and why. They can also give a honest evaluation of your performance, even if their opinion is that your performance was poor, so long as that evaluation was reasonably formed from events in the workplace or their impression of those events.
