Legal Question in Employment Law in Texas

I was hired as a secretary to the president but classified as "exempt" while I worked there (which was lawfully inforrect, I believe They did take advantage of not paying me overtime). I was recently terminated and now learned they denied my unemployment benefits. Is my main recourse to appeal the decision? In general, what does the hearing entail? Many thanks
