Job Description - Revision
My company downsized and moved me into a new dept. My job descr. was not updated. My new boss is now telling me that she is revising my job desc. and will require me to update the website. I had HTML skills coming into this company, but I accepted a position of Admin. Assistant. And, my employer does not want to compensate me for this new duty, even though I feel that it requires an additional skill other than administrative work. Can I, as an employee, ask for the raise/compensation for this new duty, or can my employer make me do it w/o the compensation? If they can make me and I refuse, can they legally fire me?

Your employer can require you to do any lawful job duties it desires without paying you any additional compensation. If you refuse to perform those additional tasks, you can be terminated. You also can be lawfully teminated even if you do all the additonal tasks for no additional pay, and do them extraordinarily well. You have no legal right to remain in the employ of your company no matter how well you perform, as long as you are not fired for a legally prohibited resason. Bottom line, job performance, good or bad, doing extra work or not, does not matter in terms of whether you have any right to keep your job. You do, of course, have the right to quit.
