Legal Question in Employment Law in Texas

Money taken out of my paycheck

I work for a private university in Texas. This year, the university has started a new program that takes out $50.00 out of my check each month to go into a fund called ''Emeriti''. This was not done voluntarily, we had no choice. This by itself makes me very angry. But what the money is for makes me angrier. It is set up to be a retirement fund for everyone at the university. You cannot draw from it until you are 65 or older. If something happens to me, my husband may draw from it, but if something happens to both of us, the money goes back to the university not my beneficiaries. Not only that, if I should leave the university for employment elsewhere (and I am going to school right now to do so), I loose everything that I have put into it. The money goes to the university fund for someone else. This is not right! First, I did not have a choice in this AT ALL - it was mandated. Then to loose all the money that I have worked for if I don't make it to 65 - I am only 49. I understand the need for a retirement fund, I am already in one here, but this just does not seem right or fair. What can we do?

Re: Money taken out of my paycheck

I presume you have taken it up with the administration and colleagues..and if no success seek a lawyer knowledgeable in employment/law/benefits...but first try to resolve internally..
