Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Texas

Broken Lease

I moved from my apartment complex before my lease was expired. I gave the office a 30 day verbal notice, although they wanted 60 day notice. I enformed them I had to leave for emergency situations, but they still billed me an outrageous amount afterward. My rent was paid in full for that month I moved and for a fact, the same unit/apartment was rented w/in a week. Is the amount of $2,500 legit for them to charge me for this situation? Understandably, some fees were from cleaning, miscellaneous things, but no 'damages'. I now need to move back into the city where I was and am having a hard time getting another place. I am willing to pay on the fees, but feel this total amount is out of reason. Is there a way to have it decreased from $2,500? In addition, I receive several reports on the 'neglect' and issues of this complex: Sandridge Apts. in Pasadena, TX.

Re: Broken Lease

What does your lease say? Does it give you the right to terminate the lease on the basis of a 30-day notice? The apts were obligated to mitigate the damages, and by renting within the week, their damages were mitigated, and they can't collect twice. Attempt to negotiate and/or mediate your way out of this. If you can't, and believe that the lease favors your position, sue them in JP court. First get an attorney to review your documents and your position.
