Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Texas
Damage to Personal Property while Renting an Apartment
While renting an apartment, a water line broke in a utility closet next to my apartment. My apartment was flooding at a rapid pace, the complex's maintenence man could not fix it and the apartment kept filling with water. I called 911 and they sent out the fire dept. to stop the flooding. They told me that problem had occurred more than once. A lady from the management company asked if I had renter's insurance, and I replied ''no''. Who is responsible for all the damage to my personal belongings, such as my computer, my bed, all my furniture, clothes, etc?

Although I have not read it, my guess is that your lease will state that you are responsible and the landlord is not. HOWEVER, if you can prove that the landlord had prior knowledge of this defect and did not disclose it to you, you can probably force him to pay. TCL
