Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Texas

eviction when buying a former rental property

I am purchasing a house from a party who has used it as rental property. There are renters present. I intend to occupy the property myself. If the renters do not leave prior to the closing, what are my rights and do I have obligations to the renters?

This could be a smooth transition, or a nightmare. Before you close, get a copy of the lease. If there is no provision for terminating the lease under these circumstances, and there probably isn't, then you are obligated to honor the lease. You may have to buy the renters out of the lease. Explore this situation carefully BEFORE closing.
