Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Texas

fair?

back in march of this year I broke my lease, but I personally handed the manager a $592.00 personal check for the last month of my lease so that I would not be penalized. Now I have been contacted by the apt.'s new manager stating that i owe $1000.00 for the last month of rent and reletting fees. I learned that the complex never cashed my check and claims it as ''lost'' even though I showed them the carbon copy of my check book. the new manager told me that it's not their responsiblity and if the check was never cashed then I am still to pay. I gave them $50 this month so they wouldn't report me to the credit burue. is this legal. I though that once I handed them the check that it was paid for?? what do i do?

Re: fair?

When you break a lease, you are responsible for a re-letting fee (if its in the lease) and rent until the property is re-let. Sounds like you are getting off pretty light if they are only looking for about $500 more than you originally paid. I would just negotiate something with them and make sure its taken off your credit report.
