Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Texas

I was looking for a rental property. Found one, no lease signed, no keys but stupidly I paid the full months rent. Had a week before I would move in, my grandmother grew ill and needs 24 hour care so I called the rentor, she no longer has the money and wont return my money, I told her she could keep $100 to put another ad in the paper. I have a receipt. Do I have the right to my money? Am I able to have a police escort to pick it up.?

No lease signed? Sue these folks for your money (you might send a written demand first - lick a 44-cent stamp - keep a copy of the letter).
