Social Security Number

I am trying to rent an apartment and the apartment complex is requiring mine and a guarantor to provide our Social Security Numbers. Is it illegal to require Social Security Numbers in order to lease an apartment? If so is there a book or website that I can find this information?

They can ask for your SS# to verify your credit and your criminal background information.
