Can a company have a contract that makes an employee pay them back $10,000 if they quit or get fired?

Only in the right circumstances, for example if that money was loaned at the onset. But you may be able to fight this depending on the agreements/policies involved. Consult with a local attorney who can litigate this for you if necessary.
