Personal bonding-for employment

My company has just started requiring all employees to be bonded for employment. I have worked here since 10/99. What is this and what things can prevent an indivdual from being bonded for employment? Also is this legal?

It is generally permissible for an employer to require a surety bond for employees who handle funds or other things of value.]

A prior felony conviction or misdemeanor conviction for a crime involving honesty will disqualify one from being bonded.
