Legal Question in Military Law in Texas

general discharge/civil services

I have a friend that is being discharged under general. He wants to come to TX and be firefighter. Will he be able to do this since it's not a honorable discharge? I have searched all ove trying to look up laws pertaining to this question and was unable to find anything. Please help us figure this out. He had no bad conduct & will be eligible to re-enlist. Can he work civil services?

Re: general discharge/civil services

Obtaining a general (under honorable conditions) is a step down from a full honorable discharge. As such, this type of discharge limits certain VA benefits (federal) and may have implications on state VA benefits. Additionally, depending upon why your friend is being discharged (the exact reason) will also play into determining benefits or denial of benefits (both federal & state). You should have your friend contact the certifiying/authorization agency for firefighters in the TX area/city he wishes to be a firefighter and ask them directly about any potential problems with having a general (under honorable conditions) discharge. As for your friend being eligible to re-enlist, he will need to look at his DD-214 and determine what the re-enlistment code is. It is normally an RE-with a letter and number code and appears at the bottom of the DD-214. If my lawfirm can assist you with this or any other legal matters please contact my office manager Mr. Ed Smith ([email protected]).
