Do both, immediately. If you're injured, you don't want to wait around (and possibly aggravate your injury.) Check with an attorney as quickly as you can. Do not speak with the insurance companies until you have spoken with a lawyer. More importantly, do not sign anything until you have had it reviewed by a lawyer.

Most (if not all) personal injury attorneys will discuss your case with you for free. I recommend you interview at least a few attorneys about your case.

If you hire an attorney, you will likely have to pay a percentage of your ultimate recovery. So, if the accident was the other driver's fault, you may work with the driver's insurance company directly so that you can keep all of the money that you are entitled to.
