My stepdaughter was awarded $150,000 in a lawsuit. The lawfirm was to get 42% of that. Now the law firm is charging her for office supplies, faxes, doctor bills, etc.. This is occuring in Texas. I am in Colorado. Is this right

Re: Law Suit
You would need to check the terms of the engagement letter between your daughter and the firm. Generally expenses are calculated separately from legal fees. I personally consider office supplies part of my cost of doing business, not chargeable to my clients, but again you need to see if this firm states in its agreement that your daughter will be charged for that.
If the case settled before trial, 42 percent seems high (33 percent is usual), but if by "awarded" you mean the case was decided by a judge or jury at trial, that is close to a typical fee.
You should contact the State Bar of Texas (Google it just like that; we're not allowed to post web addresses or phone numbers here). Then click on "Client Assistance & Grievance," and that'll take you to a page with instructions about how to determine whether this firm's charges are customary or out of line.
Good luck.
