Legal Question in Personal Injury in Texas

I was visiting a friend at an apartment community that has had a unlevel step leading to his stairwell for several years now. They recently began making repairs to replace all the sidewalks but did not repair this area. I tripped on this over a month ago causing a head injury and trip to the emergency by ambulance. I have no insurance and the medical bills have started coming in totaling well over $2000. My eye was severely bruised and swollen for weeks and is just now appearing normal again. I am also now unemployed and this fall and head injury delayed my employment search and postponement of interviews. I have never had an injury or been involved in a suit or claim against anyone so seeking legal advice to determine if I have a case and can request the management to pay my medical expenses. I had a phone message from the management companies insurance company but have not responded to the agent until I gather more information to help guide me in the best direction. There was an incident report made with the property management and there is also medical papers and statements of the head injury. Management was already aware of the accident before my friend made the incident report because the maintenance employee lives next door and witnessed EMS taking me to the hospital. Any advise you can give is appreciated. Thank you for your time.
