Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Texas

Apartment Lease early Termination

We moved into an apartment in October 2007. After 2 weeks of nothing but problems with heat, electrical, plumbing and a security gate not working, as well as mold in the apartment, etc. I sent a letter requesting to be let out of the lease early and paid a full month although we vacated on the 6th of the month. I received a verbal okay from the office staff and they walked the apartment saying everything was fine. Several months later I received a letter with an amount due exceeding the amount of the remaining two months of rent left on the lease (penalties) for termination without notice. Additionally, they immediately sent this to collections. My question is whether I have any recourse based on the fact that, had I known they were not accepting my request to terminate lease early, I would have simply continued to pay for the apartment for the remaining two months. If so, what type of lawyer should I contact. I would have no problem paying something but an amount above and beyond the 2 monts rent is unfair.
