appeal of appraisal review board order on property taxes

In spite of property sale prices falling by 25% in our subdivision in Bastrop Co., the appraisal district doubled the valuations of the property for 2003. At the hearing, my property was compared to 3 other tracts in the same subdivision and, because it was in line with those (naturally), the valuation was not lowered. Property with similar size and improvements across the highway from our subdivision has tracts that are valued at 1/10 the value of those in our subdivision. The hearings are given 15 minutes each and the chairman stated that he wished they ''had time to wade through all the material'' I submitted. I naturally want to file in District Court to appeal this. I have only SS and disability income and cannot afford an attorney. Is this something I can do alone? Is there a way I can get an attorney to assist me - or represent me - without a fee? Or at an extremely reduced fee?

In our area we have Legal Services of North Texas to assist people who fall within a certain income levels. There should be an agency in your area that may have the ability to assist you. Also you might try www.texaslawhelp.org. Good luck.
