Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Texas

My landlord had two leases

I have lived in a duplex that was a home divided into to apparments. The only thing that seperates the two is a door with a little latch on it when we moved in the land lord said they were going to fill in the door and has yet to do so? that door does not even have a lock on it. Is there anything we can do?

Re: My landlord had two leases

This would seem to be a serious privacy and security matter. The landlord is legally required to provide you with a reasonable degree of both, and it would appear that he has not done so.

If this is a serious matter then it constitutes a "constructive eviction" which is what results when the landlord doesn't properly maintain the premises, and entitles you to (1) terminate the lease, or (2) take matters into your own hands and fix the space and submit a reasonable bill to him for the repairs.

You are best advised to write him a letter, give him a deadline to have the problem fixed, keep a copy of the letter, and proceed accordingly when the deadline arrives.
