Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Texas

Landlord sold the building to settle his debts. He had my last month's rent on deposit and has failed to return it to me. New landlords say they did not assume it and I had to pay them the last month's rent. The new landlords say I must obtain a refund from the prior owner but he won't answer my telephone calls. What are my options and/or legal remedies? I am a student with limited funds

New landlords are correct. You can sue old landlord in small claims court. It will cost under $100 filing fee and you can represent yourself. Find your closeest Justice of the Peace office for the forms and instructions.
